Message from the Director
Welcome to Tulane's Preventive Medicine Residency Program website! As you explore the website, I hope that you get an appreciation for the depth and breadth of the program. Established in the early 1960's, Tulane's program has evolved over the years to provide a rich educational curriculum that relies on a wide variety of local and regional resources to train residents for careers in public health practice, academics, and administration.
As you are considering the next phase of your education,
this is an excellent time to include preventive medicine and public
health training. In the current era of medicine, physicians must
understand not only patient-specific issues, but also public health
and population-specific healthcare approaches: a recent report of
the Institute of Medicine indicated an urgent need for an effective
public health system that can respond to the public health threats
that range from bioterrorism and AIDS to an epidemic of obesity¹.
Tulane's Preventive Medicine Residency Program responds to this
urgent need by including both an academic and a practicum phase,
both of which provide for acquisition and application of knowledge,
skills, and attitudes of preventive medicine and public health in
real-life settings.
Career paths of recent graduates range from academics including clinical research to public health practice in local, regional, national, and international agencies; other graduates have entered the private sector for clinical practice or health care administration.
I invite you to explore the possibilities of Tulane's Preventive Medicine Residency Program. The program offers an excellent avenue to maximize your educational experiences that will prepare you for leadership positions in the future! As you browse through the website, please feel free to contact us.
